I am 80 years old and have lived through several wars that our country has been involved in. I was personally in World War II and spent most of my time in Manila, Philippine Islands. Throughout all of these wars, there have been many casualties. Families have been left without a father, son, daughter, brother, sister, etc. I was a lucky one to return home to my family, which included a wife and 1-year-old daughter, whom I'd never seen till I returned home. My wife and I both remember Pearl Harbor vividly.

Sept. 11 was a horrible happening, which most people won't forget in their lifetime. Many lives were lost. Our sorrows go to the families of those affected. We have a hard time, however, believing that the loss of these people is any different from the losses during the wars, including the present one. We cannot understand why these families should receive a $1.5 million settlement any more than all of the families which lost loved ones during our several wars. They had a hard time, too.

We feel very strongly about this. Even though a lot of us came home from the war, we were gone from home a long time.
