Non-lethal solution sought for schoolyard prairie dogs

BOULDER, Colo. (AP) — People opposed to a plan to exterminate prairie dogs living in school yards have 30 days to come up with an alternative solution, officials said.

Boulder Valley School District officials have said the rodents and their burrows are hazardous to students.

Many burrows are near or on playing fields, and officials fear a student could be injured by stepping in a hole, or could contract a disease from the animals.

"Our hope is that there is a viable plan that is developed, but if no viable plan is developed then we will proceed with the eradication plan," said Janelle Albertson, district spokeswoman.
