MURRAY — Hazardous materials crews removed a small amount of oil from Big Cottonwood Creek Thursday afternoon.

Only about two gallons of oil were found in the creek, near 4165 S. 300 West, Murray fire spokesman Jesse Valenzuela said. But about 25 firefighters from Murray, South Salt Lake, Sandy and Midvale used absorbent booms and pads to prevent the oily water from flowing into the Jordan River.

The source of the oil was a nearby salvage yard, Valenzuela said.
