MADISON, Wis. (AP) — A statewide billboard campaign to boost Democrat Gary George's campaign for governor got off to a false start, promoting the hopes of candidate "George Gary."
Some of the 13 billboards that George's campaign bought have already gone up. They show a picture of George, a veteran state senator from Milwaukee, but with the words, "George Gary for Governor."
The campaign spent between $50,000 and $75,000 the billboards.
Dave Begel, George's campaign spokesman, said he was perplexed when he heard about the billboards, which are being handled by North Woods Advertising in Minneapolis.
The company also handled the billboards for Jesse Ventura's campaign when he ran for Minnesota governor, Begel said.
The president of North Woods said the company was still investigating what went wrong. Begel said the billboards will be changed.
