OREM — Utah Valley State College men used a strong second half to blitz the College of Eastern Utah 87-63, and the UVSC women scrapped and fought their way to a 72-62 win over the College of Eastern Utah Saturday.

Chris Handy crashed the boards for 14 rebounds and tossed in 16 points to lead the Wolverine men. John Hille also had 16, with 12 of them coming from beyond the arc. Seth Scott and Morgan Smith tacked on 14 points apiece. For CEU, Renaldo Knowles had 11.

The two teams battled evenly through a see-saw first half. UVSC took the lead at 35-34 on a Nick DeWitz bucket, then went up 36-33 on a Handy basket with 1:50 left in the half. Hille buried a long triple with 40 seconds left to put UVSC up 39-33 at the half.

In the second period, the Wolverines steadily pulled away. Hille drained another trey to make it 48-37 with 16:33 to go. Scott and Handy got back-to-back buckets in a five second stretch to make it 58-43, and Pierre Monagan came up with a steal and bucket to push the lead to 16 at the nine-minute mark. The Wolverines bumped the lead up over 20 when Hille drained four straight free throws after a CEU technical foul. His tosses made it 69-48 with 7:21 left. Scott hammered home a follow dunk with 1:34 to go to make it 83-60, and Robbie Warren sank two free throws with five second left to give UVSC its final 87-63 margin.

UVSC evened its record at 3-3 in Scenic West play and 14-4 overall. CEU dropped to 3-2 and 13-4. UVSC plays at home again next weekend against North Idaho and Ricks.

The Wolverine women improved to 16-2 on the year and 5-1 in Scenic West Athletic Conference play.

The 25th-ranked Wolverines had their hands full with the Golden Eagles (6-11, 1-4) and needed a 10-2 run down the stretch to get the victory. CEU held a 39-32 lead early in the second half, but the Wolverines clawed their way back into it, tying things up at 44-44 on an Aubrey VanPelt bucket at the 14:30 mark. Moments later, Kestlee Nelson came up with a steal and lay-up to put UVSC ahead to stay. The Wolverines bumped the margin to five at 49-44 on a three-point play by Camile Christensen. They pushed it to seven at 59-52 on a Brooke Johnson trey with 6:30 to go. CEU went on an 8-3 run to close it to 62-60 with 3:30 left, but UVSC went on the 10-2 run down the stretch. The big blow was a clutch Lindsey Huffman triple from the left wing that put UVSC up 69-60 with 1:30 to go.

UVSC will be home again next weekend to take on North Idaho and Ricks College.
