Area business, shopping centers and even hospitals are doing a poor job keeping their handicapped parking spaces clear of snow and ice. Even after weeks of having clear weather, thick ice is sitting there, waiting for the spring thaw. This is a clear violation of the civil rights of the disabled according to the U.S. Department of Justice's American Disability Act.
The problem starts after a big snow storm, when snow plows quickly clear parking lots. Many dump the snow in handicapped parking. The store owners need to insist that the snow is cleared, including the curbs, and salt is sprinkled before it turns to ice.
Business owners who leave this hazardous ice for handicapped people to slip on are saying, "Your business is not very important to us, and we would like to see someone fall and sue us."
