There will be at least 62,000 happy people at the Olympic medals plaza for the 2002 Winter Games.
The winning wristbands were drawn Saturday for the second and third wave of performances at the Medals Plaza during the Games. They will feature Sheryl Crow, Train, Brooks and Dunn, Creed, Smash Mouth, Marc Anthony, 'N SYNC and Martina McBride, plus others who have not yet been announced.
Some Smith's stores distributed more than 1,500 wristbands, but only a fraction of those will receive the allotted four tickets per band. Smith'sTix outlets distributed 62,382 tickets, according to Caroline Shaw, Salt Lake Organizing Committee spokeswoman.
Those whose wristband numbers don't appear on the list shouldn't give up hope, however. They still may be able to obtain tickets through Hallmark stores, an Olympic Aid fund-raiser, individual communities or at Olympic venues. Roughly 43,000 Olympic medals plaza tickets are still available to the public.
Although the tickets have no printed face value and were distributed free, scalpers could sell their tickets.
"We live in a free society, and people could scalp their tickets if they would like to," Shaw said.
After problems with ticket distribution at Smith'sTix outlets throughout Utah, SLOC quickly revamped its distribution policy.
"Hindsight is always 20/20," Shaw said in a letter to media sent out Saturday, acknowledging that looking back on the process, "there are a number of things we would have done differently."
"Quite frankly, we did not do a good enough job planning for the huge response to the concert series," she said.
Under the revamped process, wristbands were given to all who were interested. Numbers were drawn at random from the wristbands, and SLOC distributed tickets to Smith's stores based on the number of wristbands handed out.
People who received wristbands on Wednesday should return to stores to pick up their tickets on Monday at 6:30 a.m. Those who received wristbands on Friday should return to stores Tuesday at 6:30 a.m. The stores will begin distributing tickets at 7 a.m. Each wristband qualifies its wearer to pick up four tickets. Wristband holders must be present to receive their tickets and must pick up tickets at the stores from which they received their wristbands. No-shows will forfeit the opportunity for tickets.
Here is the list of wristband numbers whose holders can pick up tickets at each store. For more information, check www.smithstix.com or www.saltlake2002.com
