ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The jury is still out on whether New Mexico can be a good basketball team without junior point guard Marlon Parmer in the starting lineup.

But the Lobos at least now know they've got a solid option in Senque Carey.

While Parmer, the often brilliant, occasionally out of control team quarterback sat on the bench in street clothes, Carey played well enough to help lead New Mexico to a 50-47 win over Air Force Monday night.

Carey's bankshot with 19.4 seconds clinched the win after Air Force guard Vernard Jenkins had cut the Lobos lead to 48-47 with a 3-pointer with 48.4 seconds left.

Parmer, who had a career-high 30 points in an overtime loss to nationally ranked Gonzaga last week, is being disciplined by coach Fran Fraschilla.

Air Force, which has lost 22 of the last 24 games with the Lobos, has never beaten New Mexico in The Pit since the arena opened in 1966.

VALPARAISO 77, SOUTHERN UTAH 59: Amber Schober tied a career-high with 28 points on 11-of-13 shooting to lead three Crusaders in double figures as Valpo handed SUU a rare home loss Monday night in Cedar City.

Senior Sally Johnson was the only T-Bird in double figures with 15 points, while senior Caroline Heaton added nine points and a team-high six rebounds and junior Lindsey Hille and freshman Sarah Hutton each had eight points.
