Series response surprised SLOC

SHARE Series response surprised SLOC

As the saying goes, hindsight is always 20/20. When looking back on the ticketing distribution process for the Hallmark Olympic Celebration Concert Series at Olympic Medals Plaza (OMP), there are a number of things we would have done differently.

Quite frankly, we did not do a good enough job planning for the huge response to the concert series. As soon as we found out the process was not effective, we modified the system by giving wristbands to all those who were interested. On Saturday, Jan. 12, we drew random numbers to determine which wristband holders would receive free tickets. These wristband numbers were posted at each Smith'sTix location, as well as on Web sites www.saltlake2002.com and www.smithtix.com.

Some readers have voiced a concern about the concert series being sold out before the ticket distribution process began. SLOC did offer members of Team 2002 an opportunity to get one ticket to the concert series through Jan. 9. SLOC did this as a thank you for work the Games volunteers perform.

Those who were unable to get OMP tickets at Smith'sTix still have several opportunities to see the Hallmark Olympic Celebration Concert Series. Additional OMP tickets will be available to the public through Hallmark Gold Crown stores (19,200) and an Olympic Aid fund-raiser (7,500). The distribution process for these tickets will be announced soon. Plus, venue communities will be distributing OMP tickets (8,700) as part of the program to recognize and thank residents for taking on the monumental task of hosting Olympic competitions.

And finally, tickets will be distributed as part of spectator participation at venues (8,250). In addition, the series will be broadcast live at two locations in Salt Lake Olympic Square: an amphitheater, which seats 1,500, as well as on a big screen on South Temple and 300 West.

Thanks to Smith'sTix for working with SLOC to make last-minute changes to ensure a smooth distribution to tickets and to everyone for their enthusiasm and patience in the ticketing process.

Those who get tickets to the Olympic Medals Plaza concerts will experience a show of a lifetime!
