NBC "Nightly News" anchor Tom Brokaw has established a scholarship for American Indian students at the University of Iowa.
He gave $50,000 to establish the Tom Brokaw Scholarship Fund for American Indian Students, university officials announced Monday. The first recipient is expected to be named in the spring and will receive a scholarship for the 2002-03 school year.
"From my years spent in South Dakota and elsewhere, and over the course of my career as a journalist, I have seen the kinds of opportunities that quality higher education can provide for American Indian students," Brokaw said in a statement.
Brokaw, a South Dakota native, attended the University of Iowa from 1958-59.
