LONDON — About 75 residents were forced to leave their homes Wednesday after a Cypriot fuel tanker ran aground on the southwest coast and authorities said there was a danger of the vessel exploding.

Police imposed an exclusion zone around the Willy after it ran on to rocks near Plymouth on Tuesday night during stormy weather. The ship had unloaded a cargo of gasoline.

Coast guard spokesman Wailim Wong said there was a danger of sparks igniting fuel vapors in the ship. About 75 residents were evacuated from nearby coastal homes.

Officials said they would try to attach cables to the ship to stabilize it.

The ship's crew of 12 left the ship during the night.
