In reference to the article on page A7, on Jan. 8, with the headline "Hansen's retirement has politicians rethinking their futures": Without doubt, it is good that Mr. Hansen has decided not to seek re-election.
We need citizen and not professional politicians representing us in the Congress. Along these lines, we also need to make it possible for any citizen to seek congressional office.
One of the ills of our political system is succinctly expressed by Mr. Kevin Garn, R-Layton, the Utah House Majority Leader, as quoted in your article, "I have the (personal) financial resources to run a good campaign and win," said Garn. A system that only lets the wealthy run for office is a system that is not representative of the majority.
