Athletes for Special Olympics Utah will show the world what makes a winner at the 2002 Special Olympics Utah Winter Games, Jan. 31 through Feb. 2, in Beaver, Utah.
Competition will take place in alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, snow-shoeing, snowboarding and team volleyball. Snow-sport competitions will be held at Elk Meadows Ski Resort, and volleyball will be held in Beaver. Approximately 400 Special Olympics athletes will compete: 200 in snow sports and 200 in team volleyball.
The games begin with Thursday evening's opening ceremonies at 7 p.m. in the Beaver High School gymnasium.
Special Olympics is an international year-round program of sports training and competition for individuals with mental retardation. More than 1 million athletes in more than 160 countries train and compete in 25 Olympic-type summer and winter sports.
