Salt Lake-based Mountain West Telecom has nearly tripled its total customer base with its acquisition of the Salt Lake City division of publicly held national telecom systems provider Ikon Telecommunications.

The acquisition, announced Monday, gives Mountain West a total of about 5,500 customers.

Before the acquisition, Mountain West already was Utah's largest privately held telecom provider. The family-owned company was founded in 1947.

"With Mountain West Telecom, customers can rest assured that we'll be here for the long run," said Jaron Payzant, Mountain West's president. "Our 55 years in business, financial strength and the expertise of our team all validate that promise."

"We're doing everything to make the change seamless for Ikon's customers," said Iain Beveridge, vice president of operations for Mountain West. "That's why we're contacting each customer personally to assure them that their needs will be met . . . "

Terms of the acquisition were not announced, although Mountain West said it has retained "a number" of Ikon's sales, customer service and technical staff.

"Ikon wanted to make sure their customers and employees would be taken care of," Payzant said. "We offered the longevity and stability they were looking for."
