SANTA CRUZ, Calif. (AP) — Music by Beethoven, Handel, Wagner and Tchaikovsky is being used against aggressive loiterers and loungers on downtown Pacific Avenue.

City officials believe classical music played on an outdoor speaker is a positive way to disperse loiterers.

Bayshore Lyric Opera conductor Claire Schneeberger said she found the tactic amusing and a little insulting. "I think all classical musicians would be mortified that they think playing classical music on the street will drive people away," she said.
