Oversight of for-profit post-secondary schools in Utah will likely move out of the office of the commissioner of higher education and into the realm of business regulators under a proposal passed out of the House Public Education Committee Thursday.

With little comment, the committee passed HB111 out with a favorable recommendation.

Rep. Afton Bradshaw, R-Salt Lake, said there has been very little comment from the businesses affected by the legislation.

Oversight of the schools, which must post bonds to protect students in case they fail, logically belongs to the business regulation department, state higher education officials said in proposing the change.
