Afton Oberhansley Gurr died peacefully January 23, 2002 with family by her side at the age of 87.
She was born August 6, 1914 in Colonia Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico to Ray and Flora Oberhansley. Her father drowned when she was young; her mother later married DeMar Bowman who loved Afton and her brother Ray as his own. She spent her childhood in Colonia Juarez and later in Southern Utah. She married LaVerl W. "Verl" Gurr on June 8, 1935 and lived in Southern Utah, Montana, San Francisco, Salt Lake City and Borrego Springs, California.
The consummate wife, homemaker, mother and grandmother, she also enjoyed golf, bridge and tending her roses (and she made a mean Mexican Casserole). Afton will always be remembered for her radiant smile and great sense of humor. She was a member of Hidden Valley Country Club and DeAnza Country Club (Borrego Springs) where she and Verl had years of good times with many dear friends.
She is survived by her sister, Vilda Esplin and brother, DeMar "Bud" Bowman (Marilyn); daughter, Kathy Thompson, a "much younger" son, John and daughter-in-heart, Ilauna; grand-children, Jeff, Stacey and Julie; great-grandchildren, Sophia, Morgan and Jared and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Verl, brother, Ray, and two grandsons, Travis and Greg.
The family would like to thank the nurses and staff at St. Joseph Villa for their loving and tender care of Afton - and her family.
Funeral services will be held Monday, January 28, 2002, at 12:30 p.m. at Larkin Sunset Gardens, 1950 East 10600 South, where friends may call one hour prior to the service Monday. A viewing will be held Sunday January 27, from 6-8 p.m. at Larkin Mortuary, 260 E. South Temple.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to The South Main Shelter Fund, 3195 South Main, Salt Lake City, UT 84115 or the charity of your choice.
