SHARE Obituary: Joseph Brigham Rowland

Our loving husband, father, brother, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, passed a-way Jan 24, 2002, as a result of respiratory failure in St. George, Utah, his favorite winter retreat.

He was born Oct 9, 1915, in Logan, UT a son of Zina Hawkley and Thomas G. Rowland. He attended East High School, the University of Utah and Utah State University where he was a member of Sigma Chi fraternity whose members remained dear to him. He was a general contractor, working first with his father and brother in the Rowland Construction Company and later as a partner in the Huber & Rowland Construction Company.

He married Ada Nilsson from Nephi, UT Aug 12, 1937; they were sealed in the Logan LDS Temple April 11, 1952. After retirement in 1980, he and his wife served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Anchorage, AK where he was able to use his construction skills in building new meeting houses. He was also given permission to serve as a patriarch in the area after having been previously ordained to this position while in the Val Verda Utah Stake. His wife Ada died Jan 26, 1985.

Joe had served as a counselor to bishops in the Bountiful Utah 1st Ward and the Val Verda Utah 1st Ward where he also served as bishop, high counselor and Stake Patriarch. He also served as Stake Patriarch in the Bountiful Utah Central Stake. He was an ordinance worker in the Salt Lake Temple for over 12 years. He married Ruth Nelson Gailey, of Bountiful, UT Oct 14, 1986, in the Laie Hawaii Temple.

Joe was a kind and gentle man whose first priorities were living close to his Heavenly Father, whom he loved, and being a good husband, father and friend to all; he also loved playing golf. He will be greatly missed for his story telling and his rendition of "Cowboy Joe."
