River tours: Chicago Architecture Foundation River Cruises leave from the Michigan Avenue Bridge. Tickets, $21, should be reserved in advance for summer weekends, either at the CAF centers or river ticket booth or from TicketMaster, 312-902-1500, www.TicketMaster.com.

Walking tours: The signature tours, Historic Skyscrapers and Modern Skyscrapers, are held daily year-round, $10. Other tours, on less-frequent schedules, take visitors to dozens of locations, including Streeterville, Logan Square, Greater Michigan Avenue, Printers Row and the Gold Coast, as well as Evanston and various cemeteries.

Bus tours: Highlights by Bus tours, 3 1/2 hours, are held weekends, $25.

Bike tours: The Lakefront by Bike tour is $5. Bikes can be rented at Bike Chicago on Navy Pier, $8.75 an hour or $34 for the day, including helmet and carrier bag.

Train tours: They're held Saturdays and are free for the price of ticket, $1.50.

Frank Lloyd Wright Tours: Walking tours to Wright's Prairie-style buildings in Oak Park are given Sundays year-round, $9. Four-hour bus tours, $25, are given once a month from July through October. Four-hour tours, including transportation to and from Oak Park, are given Thursdays, $35. The CTA Green Line, $1.50, goes right to Oak Park.
