WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. soldiers have detained a man found inside the perimeter fence of the American base in Kandahar, Afghanistan, military spokesmen said Saturday.
The man was searched and taken to a holding area of the base, which is Kandahar's airport, for questioning, said Pentagon spokesman Maj. Mike Halbig.
Capt. Tony Rivers, a spokesman at the Kandahar base, said the man was found to be under the influence of drugs.
About an hour after that incident, U.S. Army soldiers saw four people about 1,000 yards from the perimeter, Halbig said. The four turned out to be children looking for firewood, he said.
A C-17 transport plane was grounded for a few minutes during the incidents until it was determined that the airport was not under attack.
More than 1,000 members of the U.S. Army's 101st Airborne Division are stationed at the base, which includes a detention facility holding 302 suspected Taliban or al-Qaida prisoners.
