Sarin is detected in truck at depot

Nerve agent GB, also called Sarin, was detected Friday in a chemical movement truck after it had transported over-packed munitions from the Oquirrh Mountain Facility to the Deseret Chemical Depot chemical storage yard.

Standard procedure requires that trucks are monitored before being opened, and that was when the low readings were detected. No agent was detected outside the truck, and the Deseret Chemical Depot public affairs office said workers, communities and the environment were never in danger.

Workers in protective gear moved the containers into an isolated storage area where they can determine which one caused the problem. The containers will then be shipped to the Tooele Chemical Agent Disposal Facility for disposal.
