MONTREAL — The newest member of the Montreal Canadiens quickly found a place in team lore.

Sergei Berezin scored the 10,000th home goal in Canadiens franchise history early in the third period, helping Montreal beat the San Jose Sharks 3-1 Sunday.

The Canadiens reached the milestone in their 2,675th regular season home game.

"I don't think it's fair for me to get it because a lot of Montreal Canadiens scored a lot of goals over so many years, and I just got here last night, but I'll take it," Berezin said.

Playing in his second game for Montreal after he was acquired from Phoenix on Friday, Berezin wasn't aware of the milestone until after he had scored his eighth goal of the season on a third period power play to make it 2-1.

SABRES 3, CAPITALS 2 (OT): At Washington, Stu Barnes tipped Alexei Zhitnik's shot past Washington goalie Olaf Kolzig with 3:30 left in overtime to give Buffalo the win.

Buffalo forced overtime when Miroslav Satan scored on a rebound with 52.4 seconds left in regulation. The Sabres won when Zhitnik took a shot from the blue line that snaked through a crowd in front, hit Barnes' body or stick and went into the net.

Barnes had a hand in all three Buffalo goals, finishing with two goals and one assist. Satan also had a goal and an assist.
