OREM — Police are investigating the slaying of a man who was found shot inside his apartment early Sunday morning.
Police responded to the four-plex at 225 W. 1030 North in Orem around 1:55 a.m. after neighbors reported hearing a gunshot.
When officers arrived, a 39-year-old man was found on the floor and appeared to have been shot once in the head at close range.
A roommate, who was found asleep, said he last saw the man alive about 9 p.m. Saturday. He said the man had been drinking heavily with another man who also lived at the apartment. The roommate said he slept through the shooting and does not know what happened.
Orem Police Lt. Doug Edwards said the roommate who was reportedly drinking with the man who was slain is missing and may be armed with a handgun. The man is described as 24 years old, 5-feet-6-inches tall, weighing 185 pounds with black hair and brown eyes. He reportedly drives a 1995 black pickup truck with white pinstripes. The truck has a noisy exhaust system. Officers say the man may have damaged the passenger side mirror when he left the area.
Edwards said the victim's name is being withheld pending notification of family members. Police believe the man may have been in the country illegally, which is making notification of his family a difficult task.
Officers have little motive for the slaying at this time, although they do believe drugs and alcohol may have been factors. Edwards said a small amount of cocaine was found near the body, indicating that cocaine had been used, as well as heavy amounts of alcohol prior to the shooting.
Police said Monday morning they were seeking an arrest warrant for the missing roommate. Edwards said the victim had been living alone for some time before having roommates and has no family in the area.
An autopsy report has yielded little information, Edwards said. A toxicology report is still being processed.
