SAN DIEGO (AP) — A homeless man with a heart condition pleaded innocent from his hospital bed to charges of beating a man to death during a fight over a blanket.

John Saunders, 48, was silent during his five-minute arraignment at University of California, San Diego, Medical Center, where he was taken after complaining of chest pains shortly after his arrest Wednesday. He was listed in fair condition.

Prosecutor Doug Rose said Saunders beat 36-year-old Robert Rubio with a wooden plank Friday after accusing him of stealing his blanket at a homeless encampment in San Diego.
