I understand that the latest tragedy at Hogle Zoo, the death of a seven-year-old male giraffe, was a freak accident and unavoidable.

What I don't understand is the spending of $7 million on a new entryway to the zoo. That money should have gone to remodeling and expanding some of the zoo's more cramped exhibits, i.e., the lions' and tigers' concrete cells.

Personally, I think that remodeled exhibits and happier animals would bring more visitors than an aesthetically pleasing ticket counter.
