Favorite ice cream? Gateway taking votes

Participants will have a shot at winning $2,002 shopping spree

SHARE Favorite ice cream? Gateway taking votes

What's the world's favorite ice cream flavor?

The Dairy Farmers of Utah organization hopes to answer that question with a special poll at The Gateway Feb. 11-15 as visitors from around the world bring their diverse taste buds to the Olympic Winter Games.

Utahns, or others, also may vote online anytime between now and Feb. 15 by accessing the Web sites of any of six Simmons Media radio stations.

"This is a great opportunity for ice cream lovers worldwide to make their tastes known," Karen Koncar, general manager of the Dairy Farmers of Utah, said. "The United States leads the world in ice cream consumption, and Utah is rumored as consuming more than twice the national average of ice cream. We felt sponsoring the event when the world came to Utah was particularly fitting."

Voters who visit The Gateway also will have an opportunity to spin the "Wheel of 2002 Prizes," from which they may receive one of 2,002 prize packages donated by Utah vendors.

All participants, whether voting in person or on the Internet, will be entered to win the grand prize — a $2,002 shopping spree at The Gateway.

The Dairy Farmers of Utah will post the running vote tally daily at The Gateway site and will release the official results at the conclusion of the contest. Personalities from Simmons radio stations also will announce vote tallies throughout the contest.

According to the International Ice Cream Association, vanilla tops out at 29 percent as the world's favorite ice cream flavor, with chocolate coming in second at 8.9 percent. Butter pecan and strawberry hold a tie for third at 5.3 percent. Neapolitan is fifth at 4.2 percent.

The Dairy Farmers of Utah's Olympic findings may challenge those rankings with their own new ratings.

"Vanilla seems to be the favorite because it can be smothered with toppings," Koncar said. "We're interested in seeing how man-on-the-street voting compares with the national surveys."

Behind the United States, New Zealand, Denmark, Australia and Belgium/Luxembourg round out the top five consumers of ice cream.

The Dairy Farmers of Utah represents the interests of nearly 416 Utah dairy farmers to promote the industry's products.
