The "home away from home" for Olympic athletes has officially put out its welcome mat.

The 2002 Olympic Village opened its doors Tuesday. And directors say virtually everything is in place, ready to house more than 35-hundred athletes and coaches.

Some of those athletes began arriving Tuesday, and by next week the village will become a city within a city.

Olympic Village Mayor Spencer Eccles says he's confident the area will be one of the most secure places during the Olympics.

In fact, he even gets questioned by security officials.

Spencer Eccles/Olympic Village Mayor: "And they said, 'What's this in the back?' And I said, 'I don't know.'" And he said, 'What's this in the back?' And I said, 'Oh, it's my briefcase.'" he said, 'it's very heavy,' and I said, 'You're telling me.'"

For the first time in Olympic history, the athletes' village will be coordinated by one security command center.
