Betty Josephine Harriet Nelson Smith, 77, passed away quietly at her home the morning of January 1, 2002 in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Born November 3, 1924 in Pocatello, Idaho to Samuel Solomon and Myrtle Phillips Nelson. Married DeVon B. Smith in the Idaho Falls Temple on June 23, 1948. He preceded her in death on June 17, 1998.

Retired Administrative Secretary from First Security Corporation. Also worked as a secretary for Union Pacific Railroad, Norbest Turkey and California Highway Patrol. Active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served in various positions throughout her life.

Betty was a wonderful mom and grandma. She always put her family first. Her most precious attribute was that of nurturing and taking care of her family. She was a great cook and everyone loved her chocolate chip cookies. We will miss her singing and laughter. She maintained her sense of humor to the end and had a positive attitude throughout her life.

Survived by four children and their families, all Salt Lake City, Utah, David D. and Sherry Smith (five children); Pamela D. and Glenn Haws (four children); Steven K. Smith (three children); Teri J. and Jeffrey Neilson (five children); two great-grand-children and two more on the way. Also survived by sister, Ruth Rogers, Portland, Oregon. Preceded in death by her parents and sisters, Irene Hawkes and Arline Gladwin.

The family thanks Dr. Edward Wyne, Caregiver Support Network aides, and CNS hospice nurses, aides and volunteers for their care and compassion.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 5th at noon at the South Cottonwood Stake Center, 1250 East 4800 South. Friends may call at Jenkins-Soffe Mortuary, 4760 So. State, Murray, Utah, Friday from 6:00-8:00 p.m., and Saturday at the church one hour prior to the services. Interment: Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park, 3401 South Highland Drive, Salt Lake City, Utah.
