James Gronau (Jim) Winder, 53, died peacefully early January 1, 2002 at his home in Murray surrounded by loved ones. Five and a half years ago, Jim began an incredible journey when he was diagnosed with a rare form of pancreatic cancer, and was given six months to live. Daring surgeries gave Jim time to explore different forms of therapy and treatment-the macrobiotic philosophy,
breathing therapy, positive mental imaging, and others. But it was Jim's
astounding courage, will to live, and unshakable faith in the gospel of Jesus Christ that kept him victorious over this form of cancer that does not respond to chemotherapy or radiation. He bore his burden with amazing dignity and optimism and shared his hope and knowledge about alternative treatments with other cancer patients. His determination has been heart lifting and faith promoting to a great number of people.
Jim was born May 30, 1948, in Salt Lake City to John R. (Jack) and Lucile
Espenschied Winder. He attended Olympus High and the U of U. He married
Carol Rogers Aug. 27, 1971. They were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple in
January of 1973. Jim was an active member of his LDS ward, especially enjoying the couple's calling as stake missionaries.
As a youth he was a valuable player in both Little League baseball and football. Later, he became an avid bow and rifle hunter--but nothing matched his love for golf, at which he excelled. Jim made his career in retail sales, learning the craft at Bud's Duds, Keith O'Brien, Nordstrom, and ZCMI (downtown and Cottonwood). He managed the men's suit department at ZCMI downtown where he developed a large personal clientele, and was well known for his fitting expertise and exceptional customer service. He took particular pride in having outfitted nearly 2,000 LDS missionaries.
Survivors include his loving wife Carol and son Scott, Murray; daughters Jill (New York), and Julie (Nicholas) Hundley, Provo; father and step-mother Laura, and sister Beth, all of Salt Lake; brother Elder Robert Winder, Kentucky Louisville Mission; and sister-in-law Jennifer Leonard, Bosie, ID. Also by Carol's sisters and brother: Glenna (Don) Anderson, West Valley
City; Marilynn (Paul) Gardner, Riverton; Gary (RaFawn) Rogers, Lehi; Margaret (Brent) Gurney, American Fork; and numerous uncles, aunts, nieces,
nephews, and loving friends. Preceded in death by mother and brother Tom.
