Salt Lake-based Deseret Book laid off 14 employees at its corporate offices Thursday as a result of the economic slowdown, company president and chief executive officer Ronald Millett said Friday.
"If you look at what's happened in the past year, lots of companies have had a reduction in force," Millett said. "We looked at it strategically and looked at what we thought we would need to do to meet our goals and objectives for the year. After trying other things, that's the decision we made."
Millett said the laid off workers held a variety of jobs, from publishing and marketing to retail administration. He said the company is not anticipating any additional layoffs.
Deseret Book is a for-profit book vendor owned by Deseret Management Corp., a holding company for businesses affiliated with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It has 35 stores, Millett said, and about 775 employees.
