Activists to target train route

Activists will head for the railroad tracks this morning to pass out information about their latest effort to stop Union Pacific from running 100-car freight trains through their neighborhoods.

Beginning at 10 a.m., west-side residents will distribute fliers promoting a chili dinner to raise money for the Poplar Grove legal defense fund.

The Poplar Grove Community Council hopes to use the fund to fight Union Pacific in court by contending that the trains, which will run 10 to 12 times per day, will destroy their property values and endanger children walking to Parkview and Riley elementary schools. The trains are expected to start running next week along the long-dormant 900 South rail line.

Today's gathering will be at 900 S. 900 West near the Sunday Anderson Senior Center. The chili dinner will be Saturday, Jan. 12, at the center. Suggested donation for the dinner is $10 per family.
