Will Gators try to snap up Cougars’ Crowton?

Shortly after Florida coach Steve Spurrier's surprise announcement that he was resigning from one of the best jobs in college football, a short list of possible replacements was named by media sources.

And guess who was on that list? BYU coach Gary Crowton.

Crowton, who led the Cougars to a 12-2 record in his first year in Provo, was mentioned along with two other big names: Denver Broncos coach Mike Shanahan and Oklahoma's Bob Stoops, who led the Sooners to the national championship last season and is a former defensive coordinator at Florida.

Crowton, for his part, is downplaying his interest in the job and the possibility of him getting it. He told KSL-TV on Friday afternoon that he is flattered to be mentioned as a candidate for the Florida job but that he hasn't been contacted about it. He also said that he is happy at BYU.

BYU athletic director Val Hale said that he hasn't been contacted by Florida officials asking permission to talk to Crowton.

Crowton's coaching style wouldn't be too different for Gator fans. Florida is known for potent offenses — like BYU had this past season.
