At the conclusion of this term, I will have served in the United States House of Representatives for 22 years. Prior to that, I served in the Utah House for eight years, the last two as Speaker of the House. Prior to that, I served 12 years in the Farmington City Council.

Public service is a great honor and privilege as well as a public trust. I am truly honored to have served the people of Utah and America as an elected official. With the aid of a great staff, good colleagues and wonderful constituents, I feel we have served the people well and hope my work has been acceptable. After a lot of thought, I feel it is time to move on, and I will not stand for election in 2002.

Words cannot express the wonderful support from my wife, Ann, and my family. No one could ask for a more supportive wife and family.

Also, I probably have the best staff on Capitol Hill, both in my personal staff in D.C. and Utah; and my staff on the resource committee, which I have had the honor to chair. I will miss each of them.

In this final year of my service in the Congress, I fully intend to give my all and not let up until the end of my term at the end of 2002. I feel we can accomplish many good things for Utah and America during this last year of service.

I hope the Republican Party fields a serious candidate who can represent the people of the First Congressional district honorably and well.

Again, I thank the people of Utah for their great support and vote of confidence over the past 21 years, and for giving me this tremendous honor.
