Benefits of utilizing wind power

If cutting down on pollution by buying wind power seems logical, the Utah Wind Power Campaign is using some statistics to reinforce that thinking.

Citing independent analysis completed by the Northwest Power Planning Council and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency data, the campaign is saying that buying a 100-kilowatt-hour "block" of wind energy through Utah Power's Blue Sky Program for $2.95 per month would cut the use of coal for power generation by 1,200 pounds and avoid putting 2,400 pounds of pollution into the air.

The equivalent environmental benefit is the same as avoiding driving a car 1,800 miles, or planting one-third acre of trees.

Campaign literature also indicates that each cent spent on wind power keeps nearly a pound of greenhouse gas carbon dioxide out of the air.
