Union Pacific Railroad has paid $800,000 to the state and federal government as compensation for a 3,900 acre fire near Tooele County in July 2000.

The "Borrow Pit Fire" started when sparks from the brake system flew from the back of a Union Pacific train, said Jim Spring, spokesman for the Bureau of Land Management.

The settlement returns $746,000 to the BLM and $60,000 to the state. Spring said sparks from trains periodically start fires on BLM land but that the fires are normally contained before they get out of control.
