OGDEN — Tires were slashed on more than four dozen vehicles early Sunday morning in an apparent vandalism spree.

Between 1 and 4 a.m. someone slashed tires on 49 vehicles, Ogden police Lt. Scott Conley said. In some cases, all four tires on one vehicle were slashed. In other incidents only one tire was damaged. The number of vehicles with slashed tires could go above 50 once all the cases are discovered and reported to police, he said.

Investigators suspect a juvenile or group of juveniles is responsible. The tire slashings occurred in a 10-block-by-eight-block area in the center of the city, Conley said.

It appeared an ice pick or a sharpened chisel was used to slash the tires, he said. Damage is estimated between $9,000-$10,000. Because of the extent of the damage, Conley said the person responsible could be charged with a second-degree felony.
