The Tongan United Methodist Church will hold a groundbreaking ceremony for its new facility today at 2 p.m. at the southeast corner of Lester and Crystal avenues (about 1500 W. 2590 South), West Valley City.

An arson fire on June 5, 2000, destroyed the church's original structure at 870 W. 400 South in Salt Lake City. The congregation has been meeting at alternate worship sites the past 18 months.

Church members raised money and purchased seven acres for their new building site. The facility, which will be built in phases, will include a worship space for 500 people, an adjoining multi-purpose room, office space, storage and a kitchen in the initial construction.

All phases of the building will include classrooms and other facilities.

Church members and local elected officials are expected to participate in the groundbreaking ceremony.
