The Young Dubliners have been a Salt Lake City club-band staple since the 1990s. Lead singer/guitarist Keith Roberts just wanted to get the band's music out to anyone who would listen.
"We just want our music to be heard," Roberts said back during an interview a couple of years ago. "And we put everything in the band."
Roberts and his group ? which includes co-founding member/mandolinist/guitarist Paul O'Toole ? will perform at the Winterfest 2002 venue on Main Street, between 200 and 300 South. The Dubs will perform at 9 p.m. Admission is $18 at the door.
The Young Dubliners formed in Los Angeles in the late 1980s when O'Toole and Roberts teamed to play acoustic sets in various Irish clubs around the city. "We wanted to play music that was dear to our hearts. And we wanted to share that music with others."
Since then, the Young Dubliners have returned to Salt Lake City as many as three times a year. The band has packed the Zephyr Club and played at the Red Butte Garden Amphitheater as part of that venue's summer-concert series.
OUT AND ABOUT: Lit guitarist Jeremy Popoff, who will perform on Thursday in the Ice Village, recently fathered a baby boy. When asked if that will affect his song writing, Popoff said, "It will, but I don't think I'll be writing a Creed song."
? Two street musicians, a cellist and a guitarist, at the corner of Main Street and South Temple were discussing playing their fingers off for money. But they were so busy talking that they failed to notice a horde of people had gathered to hear them perform, and when they didn't shut up long enough to play, the would-be audience began to disperse.
? A downtown parking lot raised its rates to $20 a day when the Olympics began, but when no one was willing to pay that much and the lot remained virutally empty, the price was lowered to $15. That didn't work either, and within a couple of days the price was $10, more in line with what other downtown lots have been charging.
