Our loving mother, grandmother, Mary Ruggeri Karren, age 89, left us Feb 2, 2002 in Bountiful, Utah.

She was born Nov 17, 1912 in Turbigo, Province of Milano, Italy to John and Pauline Berra Ruggeri.

She married Joseph N. Karren Oct 19, 1937 in Price, UT. He preceded her in death Oct 2, 1966. She was an immigrant, coming through Ellis Island with her mother in July 1913, to join her father in Kenilworth, UT. At age two, the family moved to Woodside, UT a small farming community and railroad stop. She attended the one room schoolhouse with 25 students, grades 1-8, and a new teacher each year. At the end of the seventh grade, the family moved to Price. She graduated from Carbon High, valedictorian of her class, and attended the University of Utah where she affiliated with the Delta Zeta National Sorority, Sigma Kappa Phi, honorary language fraternity, Panhellenic. She graduated with a degree in foreign languages and speech, and a diploma for secondary teaching. Following graduation, she taught school for 3 years in Carbon County and with the U.S. entrance in World War II, was called back to teach in the secondary and elementary schools of Granite School District, retiring after 29 years of teaching. She was a member of NEA, UEA, and GEA and an active member of AARP, URSEA, Granite-Salt Lake Retired Educators Association, and University of Utah Alumni. She participated in the Salt Lake City Alumnae Chapter of Delta Zeta having served as President for two years and Treasurer for many years. She was a member of Utah Stereo Society, Carbonite Ladies, ACBL. Her hobbies included cooking, gardening, reading for the blind, theater, Utah Symphony, Ballet West, sports at the college level, and was a Life Master in bridge.

She is survived by her son, Dr. J. Craig Karren and his wife, Karma, Bountiful; three grandchildren, Scott (Heather), Michael, and Katie; a great-granddaughter, Lexus; a brother, Judge A. John Ruggeri, Price; sister, Frances "Geri" (Reuben) Cunliffe, Salt Lake, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Brooke.

She was a member of St. Olaf Catholic Church, Orchard Drive at 1800 South, Bountiful where a funeral Mass will be celebrated Thursday, February 7th at 11 a.m. A viewing will be held Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Russon Brothers Mortuary, 295 North Main, Bountiful, with a Rosary at 7:45 p.m. Interment, Larkin Sunset Gardens Cemetery. Funeral Directors, Anderson & Sons Mortuary, American Fork. In lieu of flowers, families suggest contributions to the College of Humanities at the University of Utah, 255 South Central Campus Drive Rm 2100, Salt Lake City, UT. 84112.

The family wishes to thank the staff at Heritage Place, Meadowbrook, and the Hospice Unit at Lakeview Hospital for their kind and loving care towards our mother and grandmother.
