TOOELE — A series of collisions left three people dead, seven injured, eight semitrailer trucks and three cars destroyed and the freeway closed Sunday night along I-80 near Tooele.

Eastbound I-80 between mile markers 88 and 99 opened between 6 and 6:30 a.m. Monday. Westbound I-80 was expected to open about noon Monday.

Highway Patrol Sgt. Doug McCleve said because of fog along I-80 Sunday night, a number of cars and a few semi trucks were parked on the side of the freeway around 11 p.m. He said a truck driving through the fog struck one of the parked semi trucks, setting off a chain of wrecks that left four semi trucks destroyed by fire and three more totaled from collisions.

McCleve said three people were killed in the accidents and three more were air-lifted to local hospitals. Four others were moved by ambulance to Tooele hospitals. Name of the deceased and injured were not available by press time.
