SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — A judge said Thursday he would consider closing a hearing to determine whether the taped confession of a handyman accused of killing three Yosemite tourists can be admitted at trial.

The judge delayed his decision until April 2 to give the news media a chance to argue for the hearing to remain open.

Most of Cary Stayner's taped confession is already public record, but his attorneys argue the statements were obtained improperly because Stayner spoke informally with agents before requesting an attorney.

Defense attorney Marcia Morrissey says some of Stayner's comments could prejudice potential jurors who hear of them through news reports.
