GEORGETOWN, Colo. (AP) — Prosecutors have filed criminal charges against this town's mayor, Koleen Brooks, accusing her of making up claims that she was assaulted while walking home from work.

The charges of tampering with evidence and false reporting to authorities were filed Thursday by District Attorney Michael Goodbee. Goodbee said Brooks was issued a summons but not arrested. She will appear in court March 19.

Brooks' assistant, Kerry Ann McHugh, said Brooks wasn't surprised by the charges but was very upset.

"How would you feel if you got attacked, and you open up your life to investigators so they can find who did it, and they turn around and say you've done nothing but lie to them?" McHugh said.
