Former New York Police Commissioner Bernard Kerik has agreed to pay a $2,500 fine for using three police officers to do research for his autobiography, the city's Conflicts of Interest Board said Thursday.
In the settlement, Kerik said he used the officers to help him find out how his mother died in Ohio. Kerik learned that she had been a prostitute and had died violently in 1964. The book, "The Lost Son — A Life in Pursuit of Justice," was published in November.
Kerik acknowledged to the board that he violated the terms of a waiver the board sent him last year. He said he reached out "to a longtime friend on a very personal matter. Nevertheless, they have made their ruling and I will pay the fine."
