ALBUFEIRA, Portugal — Shannon MacMillan scored three goals Thursday to lead the United States over Denmark 3-2 in the fifth-place game of the Algarve Cup.

MacMillan volleyed home a superb pass by 19-year-old Kelly Wilson in the 29th minute, scored on an angled shot from six yards in the 35th and headed in her seventh goal of the tournament in the 63rd.

Janne Madsen scored in the 46th minute for Denmark, a finalist in last year's tournament, and Lene Jensen scored in the 74th.

The Americans were without Mia Hamm and Cindy Parlow, both sidelined by injuries.

"I'm pleased," U.S. coach April Heinrichs said. "We saw a lot of good things out there. The silver lining is that without Hamm and Parlow, Mac steps up."
