This regards the Radioactive Waste Restriction Act brought forth by "The Utahns for Radioactive Waste Control." This act essentially puts a $200 million annual tax on all waste brought into Envirocare. The money is earmarked to fund education and the homeless. The initiative needs to get 77,000 signatures from 20 different counties in order to be put on the ballot this fall for public vote.

Signing this petition is a bad thing. It is unfair, unconstitutional and would put more than 400 Utahns out of work. Current revenues from Envirocare benefit Tooele County, Utah and the nation. This is a clear misinformation campaign by self-interested parties in an effort to put Envirocare out of business. This singles out one company within an industry to tax it unfairly. It is made to sound like it includes other companies but is carefully crafted to only affect Envirocare.

The numbers presented in the initiative are inaccurate and misleading. Envirocare takes in more volume (mostly dirt and soil) but far less radiation than competitors. This initiative would lay the burden of funding education and the homeless at the feet of one company. In all actuality, the UEA has been duped with false figures to believe this would help education, when in actuality it would hurt it by eliminating a current viable tax base. Please do not sign this initiative.
