Youths from at least nine schools in the region will participate in a free Children's Festival to be held from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. on Saturday at Soldier Hollow in Heber Valley.

Many of the youngsters participating in the event have been involved in arts-oriented residencies at their schools since November, including visual arts, dance, theater, social studies, math and science.

Jann Haworth, festival director, said the event is not a competition but should be approached as "a work in progress."

Visitors can take part in such hands-on activities as oil painting, papermaking, cookie decorating, jewelry, crafts, pottery and more.

There will be a small charge for some activities, but admission to the festival and the various performances is free.
