So much for a desert duel between Kevin Brown and Randy Johnson.
Brown was forced to leave after just 20 pitches when his bad elbow flared up. Johnson kept giving up home runs and was gone by the fifth inning.
In the end, David Dellucci hit a one-out double off knuckleballer Dennis Springer in the 10th inning Sunday and the Arizona Diamondbacks outlasted the Los Angeles Dodgers 10-9.
"It's a difficult chore — especially when the guys in front of him are throwing in the mid-90s," Dellucci said. "His knuckleball had some great movement on it. I just tried to see the ball all the way in."
Both teams finished with 16 hits at Bank One Ballpark. Arizona's Craig Counsell had the first five-hit game of his career and Marquis Grissom homered twice for Los Angeles.
Shawn Green, trying to tie Frank Howard's major league record of 10 homers in a week, was 2-for-6 with a single and a double.
"It's not a letdown," Green said after his first game in four without a homer. "I'm just let down that we lost. We battled the whole game, and we couldn't get over the hump there at the end."
Brown, who had surgery last September on his right elbow, faced seven batters and retired only two of them.
The Dodgers' ace, on the disabled list from April 14-29 because of his elbow, will be evaluated Monday in Los Angeles.
