HEBER CITY, UT - We almost lost her in 1957 to cancer. She had three young children and a six month old baby, and she fought to live. We almost lost her in 1998 to heart failure, but she had a grand-child who depended on her, and she fought again. Friday 24 May 2002, we lost her. She was too tired to fight.
Arlene Fairbanks Smith was born in Duchesne, UT 17 July 1920 to Wilder and Laura Mabel McKown Fairbanks. Her early years were spent on a homestead ranch at Red Creek. She was educated in Duchesne schools where she was valedictorian of her graduating class. Married Doyle Taylor Smith Nov 25, 1942 in Heber. Later solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. She held many stake and ward positions in the LDS Church. She loved reading and learning and enjoyed her work in the libraries at North School and JR Smith School. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and friend.
Survived by her husband, Doyle; children, Kenneth (Sharon), Payson, Kathleen Kendall (Roy), Sherman (Tammy), Brian, all of Heber; 17 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchil-dren; brother, Ned Fairbanks, Wil-lard; and a sister, Maxine Robinson, Spokane, WA. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Joseph; and a grandson, Ricky.
Services will be 29 May, 2002, 11 a.m., Heber LDS Seventh Ward Chapel, 240 E. 400 S, Heber. Friends may call Tues. 6-8 p.m., Olpin-Hoopes Funeral Home, 288 N. Main, Heber, and Wed. 9:45-10:45 a.m. prior to the services at the church. Interment, Heber City Cemetery.
