The Utah State Fair will be encouraging children to read this summer though a new "Read and Win" program for elementary-age students. It will also stage an essay contest for older children.

Any child who reads 10 or more books by July 31 will receive a free a free pass to this year's state fair in September.

To qualify, children must be between 6 and 12 as of Sept. 1. Official entry forms may be obtained by contacting the Utah State Fair or participating public libraries. Forms must be postmarked, faxed or hand-delivered by 4 p.m. on July 31.

For youth ages 13-15 as of Sept. 1, 2002, the Utah State Fair is holding an essay contest to honor heroes of the Sept. 11 crisis.

All students who submit essays based on the theme "What September 11th heroes did for me" will receive free gate-entry passes to the fair, and one grand-prize winner will receive a ribbon, certificate and fair passes for immediate family members.

The winner will also be invited to read his or her essay at the 2002 Utah State Fair Sept. 11 Heroes Program. Entries must be postmarked, faxed or hand-delivered to the State Fair office by 4 p.m. on Aug. 2.
