A Park City developer was denied a rezoning that would have expanded Powder Mountain ski resort.

Overwhelming public opposition prompted the Weber County Planning Commission on Monday to recommend that the Powder Mountain expansion be rejected.

It now goes before the Weber County Commission for final approval.

Park City developer Brent Ferrin wants to add up to 15 new chairlifts, two 18-hole golf courses, 1,500 condos and town houses, 500 homes, eight corporate retreats, an indoor equestrian park, an airstrip and two helicopter pads.

In order to accomplish that, he needs the 4,555 acres in Weber County rezoned to a higher-density development that would allow condos and town houses and commercial buildings. The resort straddles Weber and Cache counties.

Opponents praised the move.

"The Planning Pommission made a very wise decision," said Sander Lazar of Save Our Canyons. "They realized what an enormous impact this would have on the water quality, wildlife and the overall quality of living now enjoyed in Weber County."
